What’s unique about Genesis?

We are an inclusive blend of Christ followers, embracing Spirit-filled, Christ-centered worship within a progressive theological context. When we say “all are welcome,” we mean it. An open chair at God’s table has been a core value since our beginning. A beautiful bouquet of God’s children call Genesis their spiritual home, including members of the Deaf and LGBT communities, kids with special needs and refugee families from around the globe. Come casual. Come as you are. Join us in being the heartbeat of Christ in the world.

Genesis United Methodist Church is a community where all are welcome to participate fully in the life of the congregation regardless of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, special needs, economic or marital status, or faith history.

FAQs

Can I get married at the church if I’m not a member?

Yes. Reserving a wedding date will depend on the availability of the pastor and the availability of the church building. Check with the church office for information regarding wedding fees and building use policy.

Can I get baptized in the church if I’m not a member?

In the United Methodist Church, baptism is linked to membership. Therefore, celebrating the sacrament of baptism in a meaningful way includes a commitment to God and to our church family as well.

Is informal dress ok?

More than OK. Informal dress is welcomed at Genesis.

Is the service designed for families with young children?

Children are valued and appreciated at Genesis. The children begin in worship with their families and are dismissed to their Sunday School after the “Children’s Time”. On the first Sunday of each month the children remain in worship as part of their enrichment and stay to celebrate Communion with their families. Our casual environment lends itself easily to the presence of children in worship. Throughout the school year, we offer nursery and toddler care and concurrent Sunday school for ages 3-5 and grades K-5. Activity bags are also available for children who wish to remain in worship with their families.

What is the music like?

We value diverse people and diverse musical styles. Our music defies any single genre. It can be ancient or future, rooted in tradition or brand new, serious or light-hearted, contemplative or energetic.

Which doors are handicap accessible?

Handicap parking is available in the front of our church building. The entire Genesis building is handicap accessible, including bathrooms, full access to the sanctuary, and an elevator to the lower level.

What happens during the worship service?

Music, scripture, offering, children's time and a 15-20 minute teaching sermon make up the main body of our one-hour service. Other elements of worship may include various styles of prayer, drama, video clips, baptisms and the celebration of communion on the first Sunday of the month.

How does the congregation observe communion?

The United Methodist Church celebrates an open table. You do not need to be a member to receive communion. We celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion on the first Sunday of every month, with additional opportunities during Advent, Christmas Eve, and Lent. We celebrate by intinction (dipping a piece of bread into a cup of juice). A gluten-free option is also available.
