Pastor's Blog: Where does temptation come from?

"I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate . . . I can will what is right, but I cannot do it." Romans 7:15, 18

Everybody's got a hook. A weakness. An irresistible, uncontrollable urge known to jeopardize our relationships with friends, family members and even our strong connection with God. Temptation is a force to be reckoned with, leaving behind in its destructive pathway piles of broken trust, self worth, and hard earned reputations. So where does it come from?

The field of psychology talks about our shadow side. In theological circles we hear terms like original sin. A flaw in human nature. The Apostle Paul chalks it up to the indwelling of sin. And, of course, there is the Biblical tradition of Satan--the inventor of temptation itself--the personification of evil in an external being who deliberately preys upon human weakness with sinful desires. Examples of Satan's best work are described most clearly in the book of Job in the Old Testament and The Gospel of Luke (4:13) in the New Testament.

Is the root of temptation psychological or theological? Internal or external or a combination of the two? Do the words of Paul in Romans 17:15 ring true to your own experience of temptation? Looking forward to hearing from you.

temptation

This is the "core matter" of sin itself. When one feels compelled to act beyond the bounderies of normalcy. We do this in order to satisfy an inner weakness or fear, that we are not in control of a particular moment and thus feel a compullsion to reach through the vale of temptation in an effort to temporarily justify this dark void be it real or imagined, regardless of who we hurt!Dave Pegowski
