One of our core values at Genesis is the “extended hand”. It reminds us that as we reach out to others in service, we are both a blessing and blessed. Consistent and dedicated effort is put into having multiple opportunities available for people to participate in what we call “hands-on mission” projects. The goal within this area of ministry is to have a three-fold field of involvement. Those three areas are:
- Local – the greater Grand Rapids area
- National – within the 48 contiguous states
- Global – wherever God calls us to be involved around the world
We have specific ways that we engage in each of those geographic areas with target goals for frequency of involvement.
Family Promise of Grand Rapids is dedicated to assisting homeless families in Kent County
At Family Promise we provide hospitality to homeless families and keep them together in a time of crisis. We assist families during temporary periods of homelessness, encourage them to create an achievable vision and develop a strong foundation for self-sufficiency.

Kids’ Food Basket
Kids’ Food Basket is a force for attacking childhood hunger in greater Grand Rapids. This organization began over 8 years ago by serving 125 kids each school day through its sack supper program and now serves over 3700 kids each day. Sack suppers are evening meals that provide 1000 calories and 5 food groups–nutrition that’s critical to the development of kids’ brains and bodies.
The fourth Sunday of each month (from 1:00 to 2:00 pm), during the school year, Genesis provides help packing sack suppers. We need 10-15 volunteers, ages 5 and above, for one hour. This is an ongoing ministry and a great opportunity for your whole family to engage in an activity that gives back to the community in a direct way.
Kids’ Food Basket is located at 2055 Oak Industrial Drive, NE between Maryland and Fuller.
Midwest Mission Distribution Center
Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) near Springfield, Illinois, is the site where all our UMCOR donations and kits are processed. Teams from Genesis are formed as needed to serve at the facility, where we help process donations from all over the midwest and get a glimpse behind the scenes. Great short-term mission opportunity!

UMCOR is the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid organization of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the United States. Our mission, grounded in the teachings of Jesus, is to alleviate human suffering–whether caused by war, conflict or natural disaster, with open hearts and minds to all people. UMCOR responds to natural or civil disasters that are interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community’s ability to recover on its own.
